Midi-MAP Conferences

CARTEL is proud to present the new Midi-MAP (Midi pour apprendre et partager) series of conferences that will be held one Thursday noon per month at the Department of Applied Geomatics at the Université de Sherbrooke. These conferences will cover a variety of topics that may affect people interested in remote sensing, from scientific projects to practical workshops. Everyone is welcome to attend. CAUGHT IN THE ICE OF THE ARCTIC NIGHT. STORY OF THE MOSAIC SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION, by Alex Mavrovic

MOSAiC is a campaign of measurements in the Arctic unprecedented in its scale.

The speaker: Alex Mavrovic, student of the University of Sherbrooke and also doctoral student at UQTR, returns from a unique experience as part of the international scientific expedition MOSAiC. He was one of the few Canadian students to be selected to participate in this expedition, the transpolar drift of the German icebreaker Polarstern.

Contributions of a practical philosophy to the challenges of adaptation to climate change (February 6, 2020):

On these climate issues, we rely on climatologists, biologists, geomaticians, hydrologists and many other specialists. So what does someone who is in practical philosophy have to contribute? Some elements of response will be mentioned while referring to an action research project in progress on the MRC of Memphremagog (with Ouranos).

The speaker: Alain Létourneau is a full professor in the Department of Philosophy and Applied Ethics at the University of Sherbrooke. Specializing first in contemporary philosophy, he then focused on transversal ethics, the ethics of dialogue and then on the challenges posed by environmental governance, in particular adaptation to climate change.

The potential for scientific research at Mont-Mégantic National Park (January 23, 2020):

The Mont Mégantic massif is a vast protected area of 60 km2 that shelters a wide variety of environments, while being at a short distance from the University of Sherbrooke. This conference will present the specific characteristics of this place, its research challenges, as well as the technical support offered by the national park to researchers.

The speaker: Mélina Dubois has worked in Mont-Mégantic National Park since 2016 in the Conservation team. Its role is, among other things, to support researchers and students in the field, to facilitate their projects, to stimulate research in a variety of disciplines and to ensure the dissemination of results to park visitors. She is also an active member of the Mont-Mégantic International Dark Sky Reserve team.

RADARSAT CONSTELLATION MISSION: ARE YOU READY? (December 13, 2019)

On June 12, the three Canadian satellites of the Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM) were successfully launched into orbit. Each satellite has a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) antenna with a wide variety of geometrical and polarimetric acquisition configurations. François Charbonneau led the federal project on the development and use of compact radar polarimetry. The RCM will provide daily acquisition coverage of Canadian territory, as well as the ability to perform interferometric monitoring every four days. Through an overview of the technical characteristics of MCR, François will describe compact polarimetry and its advantages relating to different applications, both terrestrial and maritime.

The speaker : François Charbonneau specializes in application development using synthetic aperture radar data (SAR). He obtained a B.Sc. in physics, a M.Sc. in remote sensing and a doctorate in remote sensing, all from the University of Sherbrooke. Since 2004, he has been a research scientist at the Canada Center for Remote Sensing (CCT). Currently, François’ work is focused on developing infrastructure monitoring techniques by radar polarimetry-interferometry, as well as defining the specifications for a Canadian radar database of the “ready-to-use data” type ( ie Analysis Ready Data (ARD)). He also directs the activity of the CEOS committee defining the ARD polarimetric radar format (CARD4L-SAR-polarimetric).

These include Softimage, Algolith, Nawmal Technologies and Hexoskin, among others, where Mr. Ouellet held a variety of leadership and board member roles. Biodiversity in the digital age: new tools for real-time monitoring of ecosystems (March 7, 2019)

The territory of Quebec covers several thousand square kilometers and includes a wide range of natural environments. Monitoring the state of its ecosystems is therefore far beyond the individual capacities of scientists or even those of governments. We do not have the resources right now to answer questions as simple as: how many species are there in Quebec and is this number increasing or decreasing? An automated monitoring system powered by an open data infrastructure will make it possible to draw up a comprehensive environmental assessment for all of Quebec, in real time, and assisted by the most recent technological tools for the analysis of big data.
